Agassiz Watch Company was
founded by Auguste Agassiz in 1832. During this time in Switzerland,
it was common for watch parts to be made by specialized workers in their
homes. One house in a village might make balance wheels while their
neighbor would make pivots. These parts were then assembled into
complete watches by Agassiz. After establishing a renown for making
high quality calibers, the company was inherited by Auguste's nephew
Ernest Francillon in 1866. Francillon then established Longines
by building a factory near Saint Imier, Switzerland. |
